The British Association for Sport and Law (BASL) is pleased to present the BASL Debate 2026, addressing a question of considerable significance to the future of sport: “Politics at play. Should Government have a direct and ongoing role in the governance of sport?” As expectations surrounding transparency, accountability and integrity continue to evolve, this year's debate will examine the arguments for greater Government oversight alongside the importance of sporting autonomy and independent governance. The discussion will provide an opportunity to consider the legal, political and practical implications of Government intervention in sport.
