Caroline studied law at St Anne’s College, Oxford and Nottingham Law School and trained, qualified and practised as a solicitor at a City law firm. She moved in house to IMG in 2000, the global sports marketing agency, before moving back to private practice to become the inaugural Head of the Sports Group at Charles Russell Speechlys LLP based in their London office.
In 2004 Caroline joined what was then B.A.R (British American Racing) as Legal Director and as a member of the senior management team. She worked at the team through its numerous changes of ownership and team names from British American Tobacco, Honda Racing, Brawn GP to its current status, Mercedes. Caroline was part of the Management team who undertook a buy out of the team from Honda in 2009 to create Brawn GP which went on to win both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ World Championships in that year (whilst she was a shareholder and director of the team). The team was purchased by Daimler in 2010 and competes as the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS F1 Team.
Caroline’s role at Mercedes expanded beyond a pure legal role when she became the Director of Legal and Commercial Affairs. She however continued to manage all legal aspects of the successful operation of a Formula One team, including negotiating drivers’ contracts (being responsible for the deals reached with Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button to name a few), sponsorship and regulatory matters. In this role, she also worked closely with the commercial and marketing teams on structuring the deals to secure and retain new partners.
In December 2016 Caroline took the leap into football to undertake a new challenge, having been in F1 for 13 years. She joined Leicester City Football Club as their first General Counsel. Since joining she has been involved in a wide variety of exciting matters ranging from negotiating and drafting player contracts and transfers, sponsorship and licensing deals, merchandising, employment and regulatory issues. In addition, the Club has announced its plans to develop a state of the art training ground as well as a Stadium expansion at King Power which is keeping her busy. Caroline is also responsible for safeguarding and compliance team within the Club. Caroline sits on the Executive Management Board and is the only lawyer at the Club!
Caroline loves all sports and is a Director of the British Association of Sport and Law (BASL). In her spare time (when she is not with her three young children or watching football) is also an accomplished Irish Dancing teacher!
