Jonathan

Brown

Investigations and Forensic Accounting Sports Expert, Ankura
BASL Director

Jonathan is a forensic accountant with over 25 years’ experience supporting organisations facing regulatory, ethical and reputational challenges. He has led the Investigations & Forensic Accounting practices, and the Sports Practice, at two global consulting firms. As a non-lawyer, Jonathan brings a different perspective to the BASL board.

Much of Jonathan’s work in recent years has been in sport due to the rapid increase in commercial disputes, competition challenges and the influx of external investment. Jonathan routinely works with clubs, leagues, investors and governing bodies on disputes, investigations, governance and compliance matters, and has acted as both an expert and shadow expert on complex accounting, governance and conduct matters involving senior executives, board members and elected officials.

Jonathan has undertaken investigations, financial reviews and compliance projects in more than 50 countries. His work for international federations and governing bodies includes multi-year forensic audits, reviews of development funding, assessments of governance frameworks, and on-site investigations into conflicts of interest, procurement issues and financial controls. Jonathan regularly prepares reports for compliance, legal and ethics teams and supports organisations during periods of transition or heightened scrutiny.

Jonathan has provided expert evidence in sports regulatory proceedings on numerous occasions. He was engaged as an independent expert by the Premier League in proceedings against both Everton and Nottingham Forest for alleged breaches of Profit & Sustainability Rules, giving evidence before the Independent Commission. He has also given evidence on behalf of FIFA before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in a matter involving allegations of corruption, conflicts of interest and financial mismanagement. His wider experience includes financial reviews of major sporting events and board-level investigations.

Outside of his practice work, Jonathan serves on the Executive Board Risk Committee of World Athletics and is appointed to Sport Resolutions’ Panel of Arbitrators & Mediators. He was previously employed at two UK regulators (the Official Receiver’s Office and the Serious Fraud Office), and he is a JIEB qualified Insolvency Practitioner.
